Hugh McKay set up his own wood shop in 1979, intending to make his living as a furniture maker. He soon became absorbed with the expressive potential of woodturning and began exhibiting his sculptural vessels in 1984. These works showed an expansive interest in materials, initially featuring wood and later cast glass. This interest in cast glass and the artist's innovative nature ultimately led him to abandon wood and open a glass foundry.
